Compaction equipment for upgraded Penrith sporting facility
PROJECT: Jamison Park Synthetic Field construction
TIME PERIOD: Early 2021
EQUIPMENT SUPPLIED: Smooth drum rollers and padfoot rollers
About the project
Western Sydney’s Jamison Park is already a popular sports hub, but the addition of a $3.5M FIFA certified quality multi-purpose synthetic field will take the Penrith sports facility into the future.
The ageing Jamison Park is currently stretched beyond capacity, resulting in a negative effect on community and school sport, regional and state competitions, and the ability to attract events.
Acknowledging that improvements needed to be made, Penrith Council contributed funding for a new multi-purpose facility, which has also received funding from the State Government and Nepean Football Association.
Key challenges
Installation of the multi-purpose synthetic field is being undertaken by Melbourne-based experts Tuff Group. The experienced synthetic field contractor is currently working on levelling the area prior to installing CCGrass, a highly specialised FIFA certified surface.
Tuff Group’s Project Manager Vincent Bonasera explains that the most challenging aspect of an installation project of this calibre is not laying the surface, it’s preparing and constructing the perfect base.
“You might be surprised to hear that the most challenging stage of installing a FIFA-quality surface is actually constructing the base the turf will be placed on. No matter how good the surface is, it will fail if the base is not perfectly engineered and prepared correctly.”
The company’s specially trained team needed to ensure that the base preparations were perfect, and required padfoot and smooth drum rollers to help them achieve the necessary compaction.
Orange Hire’s solution
Orange Hire provided Tuff Group with compaction equipment to help achieve the precision levels required in the sub-base layer. Sany padfoot and smooth drum rollers provided reliable and efficient compaction. Orange Hire’s fleet of Sany rollers is manufactured with Tier 3 emissions rated engines, and full-spec safety compliance suitable for complex civil and infrastructure projects.
Vincent notes that the quality and performance of the machines has been top notch:
“Part of securing this tender with Council includes a guarantee that Jamison Park Synthetic Field will achieve FIFA Quality benchmarks and pass the required tests further in the future. This means we have to get things right from the outset, and Orange Hire’s good quality low-hour rollers have played a critical part in getting the base to the high standards required for a field of this calibre.”
