Dependable equipment for Sydney’s biggest transport project

PROJECT: WestConnex

TIME PERIOD: Ongoing

EQUIPMENT SUPPLIED:jersey barriers

About the project

WestConnex is one of Australia’s largest transport projects, spanning 33km and linking Sydney’s west with Kingsford Smith Airport and Port Botany.

The sprawling $20B+ project comprises widening of the M4 including new tunnelling operations, upgrades to sections of the M5 motorway and construction of the Rozelle Interchange. Construction has been ongoing for a number of years with key segments due for completion in 2023.

Delivered by various consortiums and joint ventures including CPB Contractors, John Holland, Fulton Hogan, Lendlease, Dragados, Samsung C&T and Bouyges Construction, this mammoth project is designed to ease congestion and connect communities right across Sydney.

Key challenges

With thousands of workers, multiple geographically distinct sites, and a whole range of space and access challenges, the various contractors involved needed a dependable supply partner.
Throughout the different stages of the WestConnex build, it was critical that the chosen equipment supplier could deliver quickly and safely whilst construction continued within active transport corridors.

An extensive range of powered machinery, portable equipment and safety barriers was essential to the day to day operations of the site, so a hire partner with a wide range would be necessary.

Plus, safety compliance and equipment reliability would be vital to ensure safe worksites and keep the strict project timeline on track.

Orange Hire’s Solution

Orange Hire’s entrenched safety culture combined with our extensive range, reliable fleet and fast delivery has been key to our ongoing involvement with WestConnex.

The team at Orange Hire were able to guarantee machine reliability, ensuring jobs were completed on time and giving the project managers peace of mind.

This is due to the age of our equipment; with the average machine seeing only 2.5 years of service before new units are brought into our hire fleet. Because of this, project managers on the ground can be sure that breakdowns and reliability issues are almost non-existent, allowing workers to get on with the job at hand.

Being able to supply everything under one roof is key to our continued involvement in this project.

At any given time, Orange Hire has a multitude of products on location throughout the key Westconnex sites. This includes equipment such as skid steers, excavators, light towers, site dumpers and portable toilets, as well as water filled and concrete barriers.

Additionally, with significant tracts of underground tunnelling involved (and the additional workplace hazards that come along with this), safety was non-negotiable. With an established safety culture and safe, knowledgeable people making up our team, Orange Hire continues to supply a wide range of products to WestConnex for this essential upgrade to Sydney’s transport network.
